  • Conclusion

KJV: And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

NIV: Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”

ESV: And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’”

CSB: But Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.”

Explanation

The extra phrase came from Matthew 4:4, which is a citation from Deuteronomy 8:3.

NIV: Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matt 4:4).

NIV: He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord (Deut 8:3).

UBS gives the omission of the words a B rating.
