  • Conclusion

KJV: 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

NIV: 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?’ [37] ”

ESV: 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, ‘See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?’”

CSB: 36 As they were traveling down the road, they came to some water. The eunuch said, ‘Look, there’s water. What would keep me from being baptized?’”

Explanation

Acts 8:37 was added centuries later to fill out the story. Bock says it may be based on a second-century confession (Darrell L. Bock, Acts, [Baker, 2007] 348).

External Evidence

The external evidence is so weak that NA do not even include the variant in their apparatus. The verse is not even present in the Majority Text.
